Westside - I may be mistaken, but I'm sure from the season after next the European competitions are all expanding.

They are. In the Conference from 32, to 36 teams. Still don't see how 4 extra teams, across the whole competition, will have teams from 10th and 11th place, qualifying. .England would have to get all 4 extra spots, for the 11th place team in the premier league to qualify.

Having just looked up the "distribution," for 2024/25 Conference League there are only 5, 6th placed teams (from the like of England, Germany, Spain, Italy etc) and one 5th place team, from the lowest rankings group. So only a total of 6 teams, who will be lower than 4th. in all the leagues.

Discounts cup winners who qualify, who could of course finish anywhere in their leagues, as now.

New Jersey

I think most people if you could guarantee we'd come straight back up would accept winning a Euro trophy and relegation (if it was that or staying up by skin of our teeth and not winning the Euro trophy).

The problem is that our owners are so shite that there is no guarantee we come straight back. Look what happened to Sunderland after Moyes relegated them.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
I don't think the Europa Conference and Premier League form are remotely connected to each other. I've enjoyed the games which is more than can be said about some of the stuff we have served up in the Premier league. We got knocked out of the league cup by Blackburn reserves and are more than likely going out of the FA cup on Saturday, so there's no fixture congestion and knackered players to worry about. I would say I'm in the minority but I given a choice I would rather us win this over maintaining our Premier league status. I like the Championship, my Burnley mate is loving every minute of it and we would soon bounce back.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
I agree that the "confidence" thing from winning against Danish farmers doesn't translate to Premier League.

It doesn't matter how confident we are, if we're set up wrong, have players out of position and play awful tactics then we're going to lose PL matches regardless of "confidence".

Westside - I may be mistaken, but I'm sure from the season after next the European competitions are all expanding. That will see the Top 5 qualify for CL, along with extra places for EL and ECL. Happy to be corrected on that though if I'm misinformed.

Cheesebgt - You may be right, probably me looking for a positive spin. but I don't think relegation will be determined by our participation in this competition.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
when sides as low as 10th or 11th may qualify for this.

Not from England, as we only have one team in it next season, as now

The lowest league placing from the eligibility rules (league placing, cup winners etc) is 6th, for some smaller nations. Can't see how that would dilute to 10th or 11th.

'If anything, winning may breed a bit of confidence.'

I keep seeing this being trotted out. Where is the confidence from our previous six wins in this competition? Not a having a go at you, but this just doesn't equate to what has already happened this season.

In comparison, we had an open top bus parade when we won the play off final in 2005. That doesn't by default make it a hugely prestigious accomplishment to finish 6th in the Championship then win a couple of one off games. Just means our fans wanted to celebrate and the club were happy to oblige.

In terms of this competition, I think it's a disappointment overall. Another elongated league format filled with dead rubbers for mainly mid table sides in the top 5 leagues and winners of minnow leagues across Europe. It is essentially a more grandiose and hyped version of the Intertoto Cup as the outcome for winning it is exactly the same.

A reincarnation of the Cup Winners Cup in an elimination format would have been far better for a third European competition rather than a shittier version of the two existing competitions for lower placed teams.

That said, if you're Roma or Feyenoord and you're in the latter stages, why wouldn't you take it seriously? It's a genuine chance to lift a trophy. In the group stage Roma were beat 6-1 by Bodo Glimt. In the quarter finals they beat the same side 5-2 on Aggregate. Suggests they were taking it a bit more seriously in the later rounds but perhaps hadn't seen it as a massive priority at the start of the season.

As were in the knockout stages I want us to win it and I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't. So I wouldn't be fucking it off. Especially as the rest of the season has been shit and this is realistically our only hope of both a trophy and European football again next season. I also don't think it will be the difference between staying up or going down if we take it seriously. If anything, winning may breed a bit of confidence.

But just because I want us to win the competition - mainly by virtue of the fact that were in it - doesn't mean I can't see it for the pile of shit that it is. I think it devalues the accomplishment of qualifying for Europe as the bar for doing so is much lower, especially from next season when sides as low as 10th or 11th may qualify for this.

As for the OP, I'm guessing he is waiting to jump in with some hilarious punchline like, "But I thought you all wanted us out of Europe!"

I’ve already paid for the home leg tickets and can’t wait for the away ones to go on sale.

There could be some interesting matches there, with three Turkish teams still in the mix, plus Dnipro from Ukraine (who apparently played their home Conference matches in Slovakia.)

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
I'd rather we focused on a domestic cup that has some prestige than this. Winning the FA cup would be proper success as we would have to beat some of the best teams in the world.
The Europa Conference is bollocks. I accept while we are in it then you have a go but if there is a priority then it should be domestic league and cup. Europa and Champions league are a different story. They are established credible competitions with some good sides in them.

Just bought my ticket for the next game. Might be the last euro game we play in a long time so I'm gonna enjoy it, whoever it's against

(OK so "enjoy" might not be the right word)

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has said mistakes were made on all sides in the way Brexit was negotiated.
Mr Varadkar said he would be "flexible and reasonable" when attempting to solve issues with the Northern Ireland protocol.
He admitted that "perhaps" the treaty was a "little bit too strict" and that the European Union was willing to make compromises.

No shit.

What do you reckon on that then, cucky68?

First team would have to play in order to gain that confidence. Which will hopefully be the case in these ECL matches from now onwards.

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
The sooner Moyes is binned then the better chance we have of climbing the table, and having a crack at this competition when it resumes.

The season is not a total write off just yet and actually Europe could be a welcome distraction and confidence booster, but time is running out to get a competent manager in to reverse the damage that’s been done up ‘til now.

Not sure the comparisons to the Inter Toto are even valid?

FFS, You got fuck from what I remember winning that, the conference gets you a place in the Europa, you need to finish PL top 6 or win the FA Cup otherwise, plus its silverware and a European trophy, not like we have won anything even half decent for how many years?

All this nonsense about it getting in the way of PL survival, total bollocks if anything getting few results in this cup could boost confidence and help us stay up.

I hope we give it a real fucking go

Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
This competition is a huge and realistic chance for us to win a trophy, qualify for the Europa League and salvage something from a shit season.

We are far from above it and to start a thread hoping that we’ll get knocked out is just ridiculous. In fact, we are exactly the kind of team that this competition is there for.

nychammer 10:09 Sun Jan 1
Re: Europa Conference Bollocks
Roma had a bus celebration? Good for them. OK look, point taken on the comparison but is it really worth losing our PL Status over?
Going down by prioritizing trying to win this and ultimately not winning it anyway will be the soul destroying. We should absolutely try all we can but retaining PL status is our key priority.
